Walter Sorrells is a bladesmith specializing in blades inspired by the Japanese tradition. He also produces a series of instructional videos outlining the major crafts involved in forging Japanese swords.
Amazing Woodworking Tool (Japanese Scabbard Chisel - Saya Nomi)
The Japanese scabbard chisel or saya nomi is a woodworking tool used to make scabbards for Japanese swords. The tradition of mounting samurai swords in wooden scabbards easily goes back a thousand years. But the tool is not limited to that purpose. It's actually a great tool for general woodworking. In this video, swordsmith Walter Sorrells forges several saya nomi.

Thanks for the video walter!
I have an idea for a folding multi tool survival pocket knife. That's why I'm watching your show. To pick up pointers on construction.
I like woodworking tools. Knives are great and all, but woodworking tools have so much variety to them.
Walter, thank you very much for the video! I personally prefer some explanations but this format is fine too. 🙂
Love these chisels. Why did you coat the bottom prior to the quench?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Looks like W1 has fallen out of favor for these chisels.
Hello Walter. Excellent video sir. Thank you. What steel are you using in the video? Which woods do you like for scabbards? Cheers!
I think he is using maple in the video
@@captainkoala5660 and 1095 for the steel
Looked like 1095
Walter I love it!! I recently got your shadow II. It's a great knife and you made the sheath minimal and perfectly functional. One of my favorite shapes is the warncliffe shape. It's easy to sharpen, fine tip for intricate work, seems to be easier to manufacture. I would love it if you would try and tackle that in your style and to see how you'd make it. Please give it a try
Personally, I dont really have much interest in the modern stuff. I fell in love with good old-fashioned hammering away at hot metal as a child. I only recently plunged into actually doing it. I would only do the modern machinery method if orders were so back ordered that i actually needed them to finish the orders in a timely manner. But i prefer the beauty of being able to forge my own knives by hand. I just love the romance of it. I like it, and others are free to disagree, but i love old-fashioned Blacksmiths.
Thanks
Obligatory comment.
I guess I best not complain about the cost of buying a set of hollow ground screwdrivers. Much cheaper than making my own. The equipment he used is many thousands of dollars and one would need a shop to store it all.
Really great video. Thanks for making it.
It may have only been my back and ass, but I was in a Walter Sorrells video!!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Best day of my life!!!
Before the knifemakers guild, a lot of knifemakers had "secret processes" often times these secret processes were wrong. They were detrimental to the custom knife business because a maker making inferior casts a shadow over other custom makers.
Woooooooo!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
I have a random question for you about micarta. Have you ever made larger tool handles with it, or would you? I have hand planes that I need to make new handles for, and I plan on having functional tools for daily use; I was thinking about making a micarta rear tote (rear handle) that ends up being about 4.5” tall overall, approximately 1.5” wide at the widest possible point, and has angled profile that contains a 65 degree hole for mounting. Overall, this handle is S shaped and the bar runs through the middle of the S and most handles tend to be busted on all the older planes directly across that area where the force meets; I suspect it is from dropping them on concrete, because something has to give, and the wood grain on the rosewood handles sits parallel to the body of the plane. So, would micarta be up to the task? Advisable? Would it have to be custom made from scratch, or could you buy premade sheets and laminate them?
You wrote a lot for nothing. If you've watched his videos, you would know he doesn't respond to comments..
@@NelsonJ1 it’s never for nothing. There’s a whole community out here, even if you aren’t useful.
@@liquidrockaquatics3900 Then go to a "community forum" and ask your question. Not Walter... It's that simple... 🙄
Micarta is available in block form. Several slabs can be epoxied together if you want. G10 is another option, it's heavier and may suit a plane for stability in the push strokes.
@@jamesbarisitz4794 Awesome, thanks so much!
Good looking knife. I use my Tactix Armory Agent for front pocket carry. Just had to swap out the clip on the sheath
20:1 water to ferric chloride. i like the slower process. may experiment with some vinegar. you sound like a very careful person so...mygreathanks and blessings
If the VFD was to start getting hot, cutting a hole in each side of the enclosure and then putting some filter material in one and a filtered fan made for a PC enclosure in the other would solve the issue for sure and could probably be done for under $40 if you looked around a bit.
So is this only applicable to cnc design?? Because I don’t see the need for a computer at all designing knives.
If your doing production this is good info. I do one off commission knives and graph paper beats sitting at a computer any day!
What is the song and what is the container used to clean off the lemon?
awesome 👏👏👏
Thanks Walter
I’d sell every piece of equipment in my shop before running one of these machines in my studio.
You are mispronouncing homogeneous
With knowing through investigation most knives end up cutting the stabber. Make me a duty knife that won’t do that!!!!
And fits on a duty belt
You are close to me and I’d drive to you if you can make one that works
Why not water jet?
For video recommend using a Sony Alpha camera which has world class autofocus AI that will lock onto your closest eye.
Hi Walter, can you do a video of how to grind scallops in a chef knife ? I can't find a single UA-cam video on it
Most would be made with a mill. If you have to do it manually, you'd have to use the very edge of a tiny contact wheel and just feather in and out of the scallop shape. Maybe a rotary tool with small drums would be more accurate?
You talking about Granton scallops? Scallops that run perpendicular to the edge? If so tye reason you don't see anyone making them is because they are useless lol I was a professional chef for 17 years and have used multiple knives with granton scallops and they range from doing nothing, to actually increasing food stick to the blade lol
if you solder infront the bolster you don't use epoxie just the pinning?
Why is dude so negative? It is possible to give advice without shitting all over his peers. Just saying 😅
beautiful knife
Hello sir, I am interested in purchasing a knife like the one I made in this video, and I want to buy one. How much does it cost? Greetings.
Yeah man. Machine fixtures are the most fun part of the game. I worked in a machine shop for a while, my own home shop is just a manual mill but still, trying to figure out how to hold things and the process is half the work (fun).
Neat video. Thanks. When I tried using a computer to draw knives, all I got were shapes that looked like bananas. I have to use graph paper and French curves to make a knife drawing.
Fusion 360 has official beginner tutorials apparently. Maybe they have something in there about using the curve lines.
@@lw8882 Thanks. I will look up Fusion 360.
You will always have my support on this channel
Any knife makers out there who are comfortable with CAD, consider buying a cheap 3D printer. You can get a useable one for less than $200 or an excellent one for less than $1000. I have a $99 3D printer and some CAD knowledge, so I can 3D print for rapid prototyping. It’s a MAJOR time saver. Designing a new knife is probably my favorite aspect of knife making, and the printer makes it so much more quick and easy.
Nah, l'm a blacksmith. We don't waste cash online
are your ears the result of freestyle wrestling?
You are unkind
When will "The World's Ugliest Knife" be available? 😁
Fascinating video. Thank you!
I like the concept of a fixed blade pocket knife, for daily tasks....
Layers... that's a question. Has anyone ever 3D printed a knife? Could it be done? Just a rando thought....
Absolutely 👍 people do it all the time
Evergy technology comes with limitations. I would guess a knife could be made via laser cintering of metal powder. It would not make a particularly strong knife.
All you have to do is hit the green button, and CNC is cheating. Said people who have never designed and made a knife on a CNC machine.
👍✌️⚒️
Designing knives is still challenging, and the back-and-forth process in drawing the knife helps bring my ideas to life. I enjoy creating my own designs. Thank you for this learning...smiles. I like drawing the knife out, then putting it on my steel and cutting it out perfectly. After that, I make a template so I can use it again.
